August Prompt - Data
Due to the nature of kindergarten I am finishing the screening of my 16 new students this week. Preliminary screenings show weak beginning skills. Most can rote count to ten but only know 4 -6 numerals. One to one counting appears to be in place up to 10 (if can rote count that high) but only in a straight line. Only two students moved each item to count when in a group. This lead to missing or double counting.
My students are also a bit lower than usual. I'm curious as to why they are lower than other groups I have had. On the other hand, we have been in school since July and they are beginning to come around. They are learning both academics and routines.
ReplyDeleteIt always amazes me how far kindergarten teachers bring their students academically and socially in one year!
ReplyDeleteWe are grouping our students by ability again this year. It was very successful last year. I have an average class and I find that they have a good grasp on the beginning skills, like oral counting to 20, naming most of the letters to 20, and naming the four basic shapes. Our lowest class on the other hand is very low!
